Find out which camera is at fault
Open the Camera app and tap through the zoom buttons. Each rear lens is its own physical camera: 0.5x is the ultra-wide, 1x is the main camera, and on Pro models the telephoto setting is a third. Then switch to the front camera. A fault that appears at one setting but not the others tells you which module it is, and that decides which part the repair needs.
- black on one setting only: that camera, or its connector
- black on every setting, front and back: more likely software or the board
- blur that won't focus, close up or far away: that camera's focus mechanism
- a picture that wobbles, often with a buzz or click: the stabilisation
- haze, flare or dark specks in the same spot in every photo: the lens cover, or dust behind it
Three quick checks first
Clean the lens, then remove the case: a case that overlaps the lens edge, a cracked camera protector or a magnetic mount nearby can each throw off focus and stabilisation. Restart the phone. Then open the camera from another app, such as FaceTime or WhatsApp. If it works there but not in Camera, the hardware is fine.
When the camera shakes and buzzes
On recent iPhones the main camera floats on a stabilisation system that shifts the lens or sensor to cancel out hand movement. A hard drop can knock it loose, and so can long exposure to strong vibration: Apple itself warns that mounting an iPhone on a high-powered motorcycle can wear the camera down over time. The result is a picture that won't keep still and a module that buzzes whenever the Camera app is open. It won't settle by itself, and the fix is a replacement camera module.
A cracked lens cover isn't a broken camera
The little glass window over each rear camera is a cover, separate from the camera underneath. If it has cracked and your photos are still sharp, the camera is fine and the cover is the repair. Don't put it off, though: dust and fragments find their way through the crack into the camera, and then the module needs replacing as well. Clear tape over the cover keeps it sealed in the meantime. The front camera and Face ID
On Face ID iPhones, the front camera sits beside the infrared sensors Face ID relies on, and Apple pairs those sensors to the phone. So a front camera fault is diagnosed before anything is replaced, and we tell you what the repair means for Face ID on your model, together with its price. If Face ID had already stopped working, mention it when you book.
The camera notice in iOS
From the iPhone 12 onwards, iOS keeps a parts and service history under Settings, General, About, and may display a notice for a camera it cannot verify as made by Apple. The camera still works normally. If the notice matters to you, ask which camera your repair uses before you book.

My camera shows a black screen. Is it broken?
Not always. If one camera is black and the rest work, it's that camera or its connector. If every camera is black, the front one included, restart the phone, update iOS and try the camera inside another app: that pattern points to software or the board more often than to the cameras.
Can you replace only the lens glass?
If the cover is cracked but the camera behind it still takes sharp photos, that's exactly the repair to ask for, and it's smaller than replacing a camera. Say it's the lens cover when you book and we check the camera behind it before quoting.
Why does the price depend on which camera failed?
Because each one is a separate part. The main camera, the ultra-wide, the telephoto on Pro models and the front camera are individual modules with their own prices, and a Pro Max main camera isn't the part a standard model uses. That's why we ask which zoom setting shows the fault.
Will a camera repair affect my photos?
No. Your photos live in the phone's storage, which a camera repair doesn't touch. Back up first anyway, as you would before any repair.
My iPhone rattles when I shake it. Is that the camera?
A faint rattle with the Camera app closed can be normal: the stabilised lens moves freely when it isn't powered. It's a fault when the picture itself shakes, or the camera buzzes while the app is open, and that won't improve with time.
