Is it the screen? The faults we see most
A MacBook display can fail without ever being dropped. The patterns we see most often:
- a crack from shutting the lid on an earbud, a pen or a cable left on the keyboard
- vertical lines, or a coloured band down one side
- uneven light along the bottom edge, or a backlight that only works with the lid half open, known on some 2016 and 2017 MacBook Pro models as "stage light"
- patches where the anti-reflective coating has worn away, like a stain that won't wipe off
- a black screen while the keyboard light and fans are clearly on
Mention either of the last two when you book. Worn coating is cosmetic, but only a new display assembly fixes it; a black screen may not be the display at all.
Why the price covers the whole lid
On Retina MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models, the display isn't a panel that lifts out of a frame. The glass, the panel, the hinge area and usually the aluminium lid come as a single display assembly, with cables and antennas running through it. Replacing it means opening the base, disconnecting the display and the parts beneath it, and fitting the new assembly.
So a MacBook screen price follows the model and screen size, not the size of the crack, which is why the table above ranges so widely between a 13-inch Air and a 16-inch Pro.
A one-minute test before you book
If the screen is dark or striped, connect the MacBook to a TV or monitor using a USB-C or HDMI adapter. A clear picture on the external screen points to the display or its cable. No picture anywhere points deeper, to the graphics or the logic board, which calls for a diagnosis rather than a screen replacement. If the glass is cracked, close the lid gently and don't press on it: fragments can scratch the keyboard, and a flexing panel can crack further.
After you book
We arrange the collection, check the MacBook before opening it, fit the new display and test it for dead pixels, backlight and True Tone before it comes back. Can you replace only the glass on a MacBook screen?
Not on a Retina MacBook. The glass, the panel and, on most models, the lid itself are made as one display assembly, so a crack is fixed by replacing that assembly. That's why a MacBook screen costs more than the size of the crack would suggest.
The screen is black but the Mac seems to be running. Is it the display?
Possibly. It can also be the display cable, the backlight circuit or the logic board. Before you book, connect an external monitor: if the picture shows there, the fault is on the display side. Either way, we diagnose it free before quoting.
Will True Tone and auto-brightness still work?
They should. On models where True Tone relies on the original ambient light sensor, that sensor is carried over during the repair, and we check it before the MacBook comes back. If a repair on your model affects it, we tell you.
Are my files touched during a screen replacement?
No. A display repair doesn't open or erase the storage. A recent Time Machine or iCloud backup is still sensible before handing over any computer.
