Some keyboard problems aren't the keyboard at all, and checking costs nothing:
- In System Settings, Accessibility, Keyboard, make sure Slow Keys and Sticky Keys are off. Slow Keys makes every key seem dead unless you hold it down.
- In Accessibility, Pointer Control, check Mouse Keys is off. When it's on, part of the keyboard moves the pointer instead of typing.
- Open the Keyboard Viewer from the input menu and press the problem key. If it lights up on screen, the hardware is registering it and the issue is software.
- Plug in an external keyboard. If it types normally, macOS is fine and the built-in keyboard is at fault.
- On a 2016 to 2019 MacBook, Apple's own tip is worth one go: hold the Mac at a steep angle and sweep compressed air across the keys to dislodge dust.
Butterfly keyboards, 2015 to 2019
The 2015 12-inch MacBook, MacBook Pro models from 2016 to 2019 and the 2018 and 2019 MacBook Air use the butterfly mechanism, which has very little key travel and almost no tolerance for dust. One grain under a key can make it repeat, stick down or stop working. Apple's Keyboard Service Program covered these machines, but only for four years from each one's first sale, so for nearly every butterfly MacBook it has now ended.
From the late-2019 16-inch MacBook Pro, and the 2020 Air and 13-inch Pro, Apple returned to a scissor mechanism. Those keyboards fail much less often, and when they do, it's usually liquid or a damaged keycap rather than dust.
Why it's seldom a one-key job
On current MacBooks the keyboard is riveted into the top case, the aluminium shell that also holds the trackpad, and on many models the battery is glued to the same part. There's no clip-in keyboard to swap. Depending on the model, the proper repair is a new keyboard fitted into your top case or a replacement top case assembly, and we confirm which applies to your MacBook, with its price, once we've examined it.
On Touch ID models, the sensor in the power button is paired to the logic board. The original has to stay with the Mac throughout the repair, because a different one won't unlock it or authorise Apple Pay.
After a spill, the keyboard is the smaller worry
The keyboard is the open top of the machine, so anything spilled on it runs down to the logic board and battery. Keys that fail in a cluster hours or days later are usually the visible sign of corrosion that is still spreading. Switch the MacBook off, don't charge it, and don't keep testing it to see if it's dried out. Book it as liquid damage: our water damage repair page explains why time matters most.
Arabic, English, US and European layouts
There isn't one keyboard per MacBook model. US-style and European-style layouts differ in the shape of the Return key and the number of keys, and MacBooks sold in the UAE usually carry Arabic and English characters on the same keys. Tell us which you have, or which you'd like, when you book. A different layout is a different part, and we confirm what's available for your model before the repair.
After you book
Until we collect it, an external USB or Bluetooth keyboard keeps the MacBook usable and lets you take a backup. We collect it free, diagnose it at our Deira workshop at no cost, and return it free after the repair. Where to find the model number we need is explained on the MacBook repair in Dubai page, and each stage shows on repair tracking.
Questions before you book
Price, collection, your data, parts and warranty, answered plainly.
Can you replace just one key?
Sometimes, on scissor-type keyboards, if only the keycap or its clip is damaged and the key underneath still registers. If the key has stopped registering, repeats or sticks, the fault is in the mechanism or the layer beneath it, which means the keyboard rather than one key. On a butterfly keyboard, a single failed key almost always means the keyboard.
Is Apple's free keyboard programme still available?
Not in practice. The Keyboard Service Program covered eligible butterfly models for four years after each unit's first retail sale, and the last of those machines left Apple's line-up in 2020. If you think yours might still qualify, check with Apple before paying anyone, including us.
Will my data be affected?
No. A keyboard repair doesn't touch the storage. If the MacBook still runs, back it up first as you would before any repair; an external keyboard lets you log in to do it.
Keys died weeks after a spill. Is it only the keyboard?
Probably not. Liquid that reached the keys also reached what's under them, and corrosion continues after the liquid dries. We inspect the board before quoting for a keyboard, because a new keyboard on a corroding board only hides the symptom for a few weeks.
The trackpad is stiff and the keys feel raised. Is it the keyboard?
More often it's a swollen battery pushing up from underneath. Stop using and charging the MacBook, and book it as a battery fault, mentioning the swelling.
