What you're likely seeing
Charging faults show up in only a handful of ways, and knowing which one you have narrows the repair a lot:
- the cable only charges when held at an angle, or pushed in harder than it should be
- charging keeps starting and stopping, with the connection chime repeating
- the cable feels loose, or slips out under its own weight
- no charge at all, from any cable or plug
- a "Liquid has been detected in the Lightning connector" warning that won't go away
- it charges, but people on calls say they can't hear you
The first three usually point to debris or a worn port. The last points to the flex assembly, because on most iPhones the port and the bottom microphone are one component.
Our free checks, in order
We diagnose charging problems before pricing them, because the repairs behind them vary so much. We go through:
- the port under magnification, looking for packed lint, by far the most common cause
- whether a known-good cable and charger behave differently from yours
- the pins, for corrosion, bent contacts or heat damage
- whether the battery holds charge at all, since a dead battery can look like a dead port
- the charging circuit on the board, if the port and cable both test fine
If it turns out to be lint, we tell you, and it's a much smaller job than a replacement. Finding out costs you nothing.
Quick checks before you book
Rule out the simple causes first, since two of them take five minutes to fix yourself. Try another cable, then another wall plug, then charging from a computer. If your iPhone supports wireless charging, try that too: if wireless works and the cable doesn't, the fault is almost certainly the port or its flex, and the phone itself isn't failing.
If you've had a liquid-detected warning, stop plugging the cable in to test it, and skip the rice, which only leaves starch in the port. Leave the phone unplugged with the port facing down and book it in. If it was fully submerged, go to water damage repair instead, where time matters far more.
After you book
We collect the phone free, inspect it, and send you what we found with the price for the repair it needs. Each stage shows on repair tracking as it happens, and the phone comes back to you at no charge.
Questions before you book
Price, collection, your data, parts and warranty, answered plainly.
My iPhone only charges at an angle. Is the port broken?
Not necessarily, and it's the most common case we see. Over months, lint packs into the bottom of the port until the cable can't seat fully, and the angle that works is the cable making partial contact. That's a cleaning job, not a replacement, and we check which it is before quoting.
Why is this repair priced after diagnosis?
Because one symptom can lead to three very different repairs: clearing a blocked port, replacing the charge-port flex, or board-level work when the fault sits before the port. A single price for all three would charge people who only need a clean for a part they don't need.
Could the cable be the problem?
Often. Before you book, try another cable, another plug, and charging from a computer. If a different cable works reliably, that's your answer. If every cable fails the same way, or only works when pushed in at an angle, the phone needs a look.
Can I clean the port myself?
Gently, with the phone switched off and a wooden or plastic toothpick, yes. Never use a metal pin, and never compressed air, which pushes lint deeper and can damage the contacts. If the lint is packed hard at the bottom, stop there: forcing it further turns a clean into a replacement.
Does the port affect anything other than charging?
Yes. On most iPhones the same flex carries the bottom microphone and sometimes antenna connections, which is why a failing port often comes with callers saying they can't hear you. Mention both when you book; they're usually one repair.
