Signs it's the battery
- Battery Health in macOS says Service Recommended
- the MacBook dies at 20% or 30%, or only runs while plugged in
- a full charge now lasts a fraction of what it used to
- the percentage jumps, or the Mac shuts down under load and restarts on the charger
- the case won't sit flat, the trackpad has stiffened, or the lid won't close fully
Poor battery life isn't always the battery: a process stuck at full CPU will drain any battery quickly. If Battery Health says Normal, check Activity Monitor before booking, or book a free diagnosis and we check for you.
Treat a swollen battery as urgent
A swelling lithium cell is a failing one, and a swollen battery under a trackpad is a fire risk, not an inconvenience. Don't keep charging it, don't press the case back down, and don't try to remove it yourself. Book the replacement, say the battery is swollen, and we deal with it accordingly. Once it's out, a swollen battery is disposed of properly, not thrown away with general waste.
Why battery prices vary by model
On older MacBooks the battery is screwed in and comes out in minutes. On most Retina and Apple Silicon models it is glued into the case as several cells, and taking it out safely takes time and care, which shows in the price. On some models the battery only comes together with the top case and keyboard. Making the new battery last
Keep Optimized Battery Charging on, don't leave the MacBook on a hot car seat or in direct sun, and don't worry about topping it up: modern MacBook batteries are happiest between roughly 20% and 80% and don't need regular full drains. Heat ages them faster than anything else.

How can I tell my MacBook battery needs replacing?
Open System Settings, then Battery, then the info button beside Battery Health. A condition of Service Recommended, maximum capacity well under 80%, or a cycle count close to 1,000 on a recent model all point to a worn battery.
The trackpad is stiff and the case is lifting. What should I do?
Stop using and charging the MacBook. That's the classic sign of a swollen battery pushing up from underneath. Book a battery replacement and mention the swelling so it's treated as a priority.
Will I lose any files?
No. A battery replacement doesn't open or erase the storage. If the MacBook still runs, back it up first, as you would before any repair.
Why do the readings look odd for the first few days?
macOS calibrates to a new battery over its first few charge cycles. Run it down and charge it fully a couple of times and the readings settle.
