Check your battery in two minutes
Windows records how much charge the battery held when new and how much it holds today. To see it:
- Right-click the Start button and open Terminal, PowerShell or Command Prompt.
- Type
powercfg /batteryreportand press Enter. - Open the battery-report.html file at the location it shows.
Compare Design Capacity with Full Charge Capacity. A battery that now fills to well under two thirds of its design figure is worn, and on most laptops the report shows the cycle count alongside. Dell, HP and Lenovo also include a battery check in their support apps and in the BIOS, which says the same thing in plainer language.
When the battery isn't to blame
Several faults look like a dead battery but cost less to fix, or nothing at all:
- Stuck at 60% or 80% and showing "plugged in, not charging": usually a charge limit turned on in the maker's app, such as Lenovo Vantage, MyASUS or Dell Power Manager. It's a setting that protects the battery, not a fault.
- Charging that depends on how you hold the cable: that's the socket or the cable, not the battery.
- A warning about a slow or unrecognised charger: the adapter is the wrong wattage, or failing.
- A healthy battery report but short runtime: something running in the background, or a laptop running hot because dust has choked its fans.
If the report says the battery is healthy, book a free diagnosis rather than a battery. Paying for a part your laptop didn't need helps nobody.
Getting the right battery
Laptop batteries aren't interchangeable, even within one model line. The same laptop is often sold with two or three different batteries, a smaller and a larger capacity, with different connectors or mounting points. The dependable identifier is the part number printed on the battery, with its voltage and capacity in watt-hours beside it, and that's what we match a replacement against.
Age matters too. Lithium cells deteriorate even on a shelf, so for a laptop that went out of production years ago, a battery sold as new may already have lost capacity. For older machines we tell you what is realistically available, and when a replacement isn't worth the money, we say so.
If the case is bulging
A trackpad that has risen or stopped clicking, a base panel bowing outwards, or a laptop that rocks on a flat desk all point to a battery swelling inside the case. Unplug it, shut it down and stop using it. Don't press the case flat, and don't prise at or pierce the battery. Carry it on its own rather than squeezed into a full bag, and tell us it's swollen when you book so it's collected and handled accordingly.
Helping the new battery last
Heat ages a laptop battery faster than use does. A laptop left running on a bed, a car seat or a sunny windowsill cooks its battery. If yours lives plugged in on a desk, turn on the charge limit in the maker's app so it sits at about 80% instead of full. And clogged fans run a new battery hot from day one, so if your laptop is loud or hot, mention it when you book.
Collection and return are free, the repair is done at our Deira workshop, and each stage shows on repair tracking. For everything else we fix on Windows laptops, see laptop repair in Dubai.
Questions before you book
Price, collection, your data, parts and warranty, answered plainly.
How do I get a price for my laptop battery?
Book with the brand and model number, plus the battery part number if you can read it from the battery report or the battery itself. If we publish a price for your model, you see it while booking. If we don't, we check the laptop free at our workshop and then confirm the repair and its price.
Can I just keep the laptop on the charger?
With a worn battery, yes: it runs on mains power, though it switches off the moment the plug is knocked, taking unsaved work with it. With a swollen battery, no. Stop using it and don't charge it.
How long should a laptop battery last?
Most are rated for several hundred full charge cycles, which for typical use means roughly two to four years before the drop in runtime becomes obvious. Heat, and years spent sitting at 100% on the charger, both shorten that.
Will I lose any files?
No. Replacing the battery doesn't touch the drive. On a few models the clock and some BIOS settings reset when the battery is disconnected, which takes a minute to put back.
Should I buy a battery online and fit it myself?
On an older laptop with a clip-in battery, it's reasonable as long as the part number matches exactly. On most current laptops the battery sits inside the case, connected to the board by a delicate cable and sometimes glued down, and the cheapest batteries sold online are often old stock or lack proper protection circuits. The battery is the one laptop part that can catch fire when it's wrong.
